Faith vs Belief

Part of this is from http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/richard_carrier/fish.html/

Blind Faith is something one has when there is no physical evidence of a claim. “I have faith that there is a Santa Claus”, or “I have faith that there is a God”

Reasonable Faith is something one has when there is physical evidence of a claim – “I have reasonable faith that the elevator will not fail”

Faith is a belief in the trustworthiness of an idea that has not been proven.

Faith is belief in an idea that is unsupported by facts or evidence.

Faith is usually employed to describe a particular justification for believing something, rather than to simply say you believe it. Faith is usually employed to describe a particular justification for believing something, rather than to simply say you believe it.

Beliefs are mental constructs, conclusions about reality. Our beliefs are a reflection of our culture and this becomes obvious when we observe other cultures. We say we ‘believe’ in things we cannot see because we have ‘faith’ in them.

Faith vs Belief – the definition of Faith from here:

ttp://www.timboucher.com/journal/2005/01/10/faith-vs-belief//

The confidence that what one knows, feels, or senses is ultimately real and can be verified by direct personal experience. Distinguished from belief, which always involves suppositions that cannot be verified, faith may be regarded as intuitive certainty, rather than blind reliance on suppositions. For instance, to have faith in life after death is not the same as embracing beliefs about life after death. Faith, defined as confidence in what it is possible to experience or achieve for oneself, can exist independent of beliefs.

My opinion:

If people lived by reason instead of faith, a great many tragedies would be averted, and an equal number of advances would be made, especially in human behavior.

Since I have always lived my life with meaning and joy without needing a belief in god or an afterlife, I know that such beliefs are unnecessary.

One Response to Faith vs Belief

  1. James says:

To be questioned about ones religion is the heart and soul of their very being. To be a Christian is to know why and what you believe. Obtaining knowledge is the center core of Gods word and the opposite of that is ignorance which God despises. This is more of a problem then people of faith realize. How will Christians be able to help others if you don’t know what you believe yourself? When you ask someone a question regarding their belief you will find that some don’t even know and will just say, “Oh I don’t know that’s just the way we’ve always done it.” Also some folks will say, “That’s just the way we were raised,” without ever questioning it. There are some churches that believe it is not the commission of the modern day church to spread or even know the gospel.
