Monthly Meetings

Our Next Monthly Meeting has been rescheduled to May 1 due to heavy rain on April 25.  God versus Spooks and Spirits: A Non-Cognitivist Critique of Theism

Greg Cavin is well-known adversary of Christian apologists.  He has debated William Lane Craig at the Bren Events Center at UCI and Doug Geivett on the Existence of God at BIOLA University.  He received his BA in Religion from USC, an MA in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary (in Pasadena), and a BA, MA, and PhD in Philosophy from UCI.  Ironically, he rejected Christianity while in his final quarter at Fuller Seminary.  For this reason, he finds it amusing to embrace the label “Apostate Christian,” since the alienans adjective cancels out the meaning of the noun!  At UCI, he did my doctoral dissertation (a Bayesian approach to miracles and the Resurrection of Jesus) under the world-famous philosopher of religion, Nelson Pike, and the equally famous philosophers of science, Brian Skyrms and Karel Lambert.  He is the senior member of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, at Cypress College, where he have taught since 1996.  In addition to Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics, Critical Thinking, and Symbolic Logic, he teaches the Philosophy of Religion and Jesus and His Interpreters courses at Cypress.

6:30pm social time, meeting starts around 7:20pm.   Must be a BYS member or member’s guest to attend.

See our Meetup page for more information

$5 donation requested, $12 with dinner.

Each of our regular monthly meetings has either a guest speaker or a topic to discuss.  We also sponsor movie nights, solstice parties, science-oriented field trips and outreach programs to encourage other non-believers to join our group.  (see the menu for the link)  We usually meet during the fourth week of each month.

If you enjoy our recent billboard campaigns and are interested in some enlightening discussion on a science-based world view (vs faith-based) , please join Backyard Skeptics by going to our meetup.com site HERE. Your email is confidential on meetup.com, even to us.  Our schedule of events is also on our Event Meetup Page.  If you are from out of town you can still join the Meetup group, but make sure and falsely RSVP once every 6 months to stay in the group.

We request a minimum $5 donation if you attend our meetings and a minimum $12 donation if you will be joining us for dinner. (Special events might be more)  Dinner is usually grilled chicken, chicken and veggie lasagna, potato salad, green salad, soft drinks and desert.  Wine and beer are $2 each.

If you do not want to join Meetup.com but would still like to receive our free bi-weekly newsletter called the Secular Gazette, send an email to info@backyardskeptics.com and we will add you to our confidential list which includes the dates of our meetings and events. However, you won’t be able to RSVP to the BYS meetings or events.

And please – if you are a God-believer and wish to proselytize or preach, please don’t join. However, if you are truly interested in finding our more about how and why a non-believer does not have any beliefs in any gods or supernatural deities, you are welcome to attend as a guest.  Please email me for more information.
