Press Conference / Media Advisory
Valentine’s Day Atheist Billboard
February 14, 3pm
American Atheists and Backyard Skeptics displays an atheist billboard for couples on Valentines Day
There will be a press conference in the parking lot of the American Legion in Westminster in between the 22 and 405 freeways on Beach Blvd. After the press conference, several non-believing couples will be having a photo op with the billboard in the background.
The local grass-roots skeptics/atheist group Backyard Skeptics in conjunction with American Atheists from New York has placed the 48×14 foot billboard with a picture of a couple in bed with the words ” Atheists make better lovers – after all, no one is watching”
WHO: The largest Orange County based skeptics and atheist group, Backyard Skeptics in coordination with American Atheists from New York
WHEN: Valentine’s Day February 14, 2012 at 4:30pm
WHERE: American Legion parking lot, 14582 Beach Blvd, about 3 miles south of the 22 freeway.
WHY: Agnostics, atheists and the ‘nones’ – Americans that have no religious affiliation are rarely represented on Valentines Day. Bruce Gleason, founder of Backyard Skeptics says that recent studies show that atheists indeed have better sex, safer sex and less extra-marital affairs.
A 2010 article by Kanazawa mentions that atheists are more likely to be sexually exclusive (more loyal) and have higher IQ’s.
A study by Lefkowitz says religious people had less efficacy with condom use and strange thoughts about HIV risk. Other studies have repeatedly found that religious people are less educated about sex, have higher teen pregnancy rates and have higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases.
Gleason says: “Atheists make better lovers because they have less guilt about sex, while people believing in religious superstitions attach a negative aspect to sex. We do not think a supernatural deity is watching us – neither in life nor in bed”
Gleason continues: “Many Americans have a great deal of distrust with atheists even thought many friends, fellow workers and family members are atheists. It’s common knowledge among atheists that they are just as moral, and often more moral than the religious believers.”
Backyard Skeptics is the largest skeptic and atheist group in Orange County with over 540 members and growing. They promote science, reason and critical thinking. Those interested can visit backyardskeptics.com to explore the world without religious dogma at their monthly meetings.
Now in its fourth decade, American Atheists is dedicated to working for the civil rights of atheists, promoting separation of state and church, and providing information about atheism. The organization was founded by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the noted atheist activist, as the result of her successful battle against mandatory school prayer and Bible recitation
Mr. Gleason is available for phone interviews or email statements concerning atheism and any atheist/religious related issue in future media stories.
